What's new in ArcGIS for Maritime: Charting (Maritime Charting)

With the 10.1 release, the ArcGIS for Maritime: Charting (Esri Nautical Solution and formerly PLTS for ArcGIS—Nautical Solution) deprecated, added, and enhanced functionality. This information is distributed across these main technology areas of the solution: configuration, product library, editing, and cartography.

New at Service Pack 1, Patch 5

The following are updates released with Patch 5.

New at Service Pack 1, Patch 4

DNC tools

  • Group Layers by Theme is a new tool on the Nautical DNC toolbar that groups layers in the Table Of Contents window by DNC theme.
  • The Notes Editor tool now supports adding a note to and deleting notes for multiple features within the same feature class.

Deprecated functionality

The Cascade Move Master/Slave Features option has been removed from the Nautical Properties in the Production Properties dialog box. This functionality is now handled internally by the edit extension, and all grouped master/slave features are moved automatically.

Symbology

The following files were updated to support new and updated symbology.

  • INT1.style
  • INT1.cxml
  • Chart_View_10.1.0.0.vvs
  • NAUTICAL_CHART_TEMPLATE_GX_10.1.0.0

The symbology now supports the rendering of wind farms, wind turbines, and wave farms. All Compass Rose symbols were updated to conform to the S-4 specification.

Cartography

The CHART product data model includes the following changes:

  • Topology was removed from the Nautical feature dataset.
  • The Masks feature dataset was removed.
  • Feature classes were added to the CartographicFeatures feature dataset to support Generate Cartographic Limits: NaturalFeaturesA_L, DepthsA_L.

Displace Depth Annotation—A new tool on the Nautical Editing Cartography toolbar that allows you to show sounding values out of position in accordance with section B-412.2 of the IHO paper chart standard, S-4.

DNC

Convert DNC GDB To VPF is a new geoprocessing tool that is also available on the Nautical DNC toolbar. It supports exporting geodatabase data to the VPF standard.

Configuration

Data models

  • The data models to support INIS and IENC products were added.
  • The NIS data model contains the new field NIS_EDIT_DATE which is synchronized with the NIS_LAST_MOD field for all modifications except when verifying features; the NIS_EDIT_DATE field is not changed when a feature is marked as NIS_Verified.
  • The ENC, CHART, and AML product data models (including CLB, ESB, LBO, MFF, RAL, and SBO) contain the new field EDIT_DATE that is synchronized with the LAST_MOD field for all modifications except when verifying features; the EDIT_DATE field is not changed when a feature is marked as Verified.
  • The CHART product data model includes the following changes:
    • Topology removed from the Nautical feature dataset
    • Masks feature dataset removed
    • Feature classes added to the CartographicFeatures feature dataset to support Generate Cartographic Limits:

      • MilitaryA_L

Nautical properties

  • The Scratch Workspace Location property in the Nautical Properties pane of the Production Properties dialog box stores the workspace used during processes.
  • The Reshape Shared Edges Show Config property in the Nautical Properties pane of the Production Properties dialog box was removed. This functionality is handled by the ArcGIS for Desktop Reshape Edge tool.

Product library

New commands/functionality

  • The New Nautical Product command creates an S-57 or chart production database and the product library tree structure from the series level in the Product Library tree view. DNC products are not supported.
  • The Publish or View Metadata command shows the metadata entries for S-57 or paper chart products at a specific Edition and Update. You also have the ability to publish and unpublish the product's last export. DNC products are not supported.
  • The Export Nautical Product command allows you to export S-57 and paper chart products from the product library. DNC products are not supported.
  • The Add Chart Panel command allows you to add a chart panel to an existing chart product.
  • The Create Database command allows you to create and populate the instance production database with data from the NIS database if the creation process was not completed when you used the New Nautical Product wizard.
  • Enable SQL Enterprise is a check box for storing data in an SQL enterprise available in the solution properties.

Enhanced functionality

  • The Product Instances pane at the product class level was renamed to Nautical Environment, and you can now choose between the desktop or enterprise production environments.
  • Update Instance was removed from the context menu at the instance level, and Update Instances at the product level was renamed to Get Changes.

Editing

New/Enhanced tools

  • The Compilation Scale tool on the Nautical toolbar allows you to change the compilation scale value inside and out of an edit session.
  • The SCAMIN tool now supports the Radar Range method based on the S-65 standard.
  • The Select Unverified Features tool selects unverified features in the entire workspace and allows you to browse through each one in the Browse Features window.
  • The Set CDR Owner Workspace command in the Set Tool Options of the Production Properties dialog box was renamed to Set NIS Owner Workspace and moved to the Product Library window.
  • The Generate Depth Area geoprocessing tool was replaced with the Generate Depth Areas (Selected Feature) tool on the Nautical toolbar.

Deprecated tools

  • The Reshape Shared Edges tool was removed. All the functionality is handled by the ArcGIS for Desktop Reshape Edge tool.
  • The Nautical Publisher tool was removed. This functionality is now in the Publish or View Metadata command available in the Product Library window.
  • The Geodatabase to S-57 tool was removed. This functionality is now in the Export Nautical Product command available in the Product Library window.
  • The Suppress tool on the Nautical toolbar was removed.
  • The UnSuppress tool on the Nautical toolbar was removed.

Cartography

Geoprocessing

To streamline the cartographic workflow, the following geoprocessing tools were added to the Nautical Cartography toolbar:

  • Generate Light Sector
  • Generate Cartographic Limits
  • Generate Annotation Masks
  • Magnetic Calculator

Database elements

Maritime Charting now maintains all explanatory notes from S-4 in the Database Element Library.

Symbology

  • Nautical Symbology tools are now used in place of Visual Specification tools. Nautical Symbology toolbar with the Symbology drop-down menu
  • The symbology now supports the rendering of Tidal stream panel data (TS_PAD) and Tidal stream time series (TS_TIS) diagrams.
  • The following INT2 grid XMLs have been enhanced:

    • INT2 J
    • INT2 K

Surround element tools

The following tools add surround elements to the chart layout:

  • INT2 Scale Bars is an option in the graphic table element wizard that allows you to insert a scale bar based on the map scale.
  • Generate Source Diagram adds a data frame and layers to your chart.

BSB tools

Maritime Charting now supports the BSB export format. The following are new tools/functionality to support your BSB workflow:

  • Create BSB Links allows you to create links between notes (map elements) that were inserted from the element library and any location in the data frame.
  • Find BSB Note or Links allows you to find links and notes that are associated with one another.
  • Toggle BSB Links allows you to turn on or off the visibility of BSB links.

HACG tools

The following tools were added to support HACG:

  • Insert Scale Bar adds up to three commonly used nautical scale bars: Meters, Yards, and Nautical Miles.
  • Create ePODS Source Diagram helps automate the creation of source diagrams for ePODS products.

Validation

The nautical batch jobs now have spatial batch jobs in addition to the attribute batch jobs. Eight spatial batch jobs have been added based on categories in Use of the Object Catalogue for ENC; checks were also added to two attribute batch jobs.
