Evaluating cell rectangularity (Maritime Charting)

The Feature Rectangularity Check is used to check polygon features that must be rectangular. It unites features based on a chosen field and checks the resulting union for rectangularity. If the selected features are not rectangular, then the nonrectangular records are returned by this check.

All data held in S-57 format is contained in rectangular cells. S-57 Appendix B.1 in section 2.2 states that cells must be rectangular, meaning that they must be defined by two meridians and two parallels. This check should be run on the M_COVR subtype based on its FCSubtype attribute field to see if the cell is rectangular. The union of all MetaDataA M_COVR features should always be rectangular in shape.

NoteNote:

This check will be removed in the 10.2.1 release; it is included in third-party validation.

Steps:
  1. Start ArcMap.
  2. On the main menu, click Customize > Toolbars > Data Reviewer.
  3. Click the Select Data Check drop-down arrow on the Data Reviewer toolbar, click the plus sign (+) next to Nautical Checks, then click Feature Rectangularity Check.

The Feature Rectangularity Check Properties dialog box appears.

  4. Click the Feature Class/Subtype drop-down arrow and choose the feature class MetaDataA and subtype M_COVR.

A list of all the fields for the selected feature class or subtype appears in the Union Field area.

  5. Choose FCSubtype as the union field for checking cell rectangularity.

You can only choose one field.

  6. When running this check on M_COVR, always check the Always Run on Full Database check box.

This allows the check to consider the M_COVR features as a whole when run on the current extent. This setting is saved for subsequent uses of this check.

  7. If necessary, type descriptive text for the check results in the Notes text box in the Reviewer Remarks area.
  8. If necessary, click the Severity drop-down arrow and choose a value that indicates the priority of the check's results in the Reviewer Remarks area.

The severity indicates the importance of the check result. The values range from 1 to 5, with 1 being the highest priority and 5 being the lowest.
