Solutions in the product library (Defense Mapping)

Solutions are the top level of the product library. They serve as the containers for specific product classes, series, products, instances, and areas of interest (AOIs) related to an industry or project.

When a solution is added to the product library, there are several properties that are available for configuration. These properties are divided into two sections: General and Solution. The General section contains information such as the name, alias, and description of the solution. The Solution section contains information that relates to the spatial reference for the areas of interest and the way files are stored for the solution.

To add a solution, only the properties in the General section are required. The rest of the properties can be optionally configured if you want to customize the spatial reference or storage method.

General properties

The properties in the General section allow you to define basic information about the solution and its state. They include the following:

Property name

Description

Name

The name of the solution (limited to 230 characters; special characters are not valid)

Alias

The name displayed in the Product Library tree view

Description

A description for the solution

Visible

Indicates whether the solution is visible to other users when a Spatial Database Engine (SDE) database is used as the product library (By default, the value is False. When it is set to True, other product library users can see the solution and product class in the Product Library tree view .)

Solution properties

The properties in the Solution section allow you to specify which spatial reference is going to be used when the product class is created and, in turn, the areas of interest associated with that product class through the series, product, and instances.

NoteNote:

This value is an initialization value; once the product class is created with this value, changing this setting does not change the spatial reference of the product class.

The instances under the product class do not have to share the same spatial reference; however, it is recommended that they use the same geographic coordinate system. Spatial reference properties include the following:

Property name

Description

Default Spatial Reference

The name of the spatial reference that will be used when the product class is created. The areas of interest will be stored using this spatial reference.

Use Existing

Indicates whether you are going to use the current spatial reference as the default AOI spatial reference. The default value for this is True. If it is set to True, you can choose to use any spatial reference that is available within the product library. If it is set to False, you need to manually choose the spatial reference to use with AOIs.

Name

The name of the spatial reference.

Description

A description of the spatial reference.

Base Spatial Reference

The name of the default spatial reference for the areas of interest.

Default Spatial Reference properties

You can also indicate what storage options to use for the files associated with the solution. They include the following:

Property name

Description

Storage Type

Indicates whether you want to use the product library geodatabase or a location in the file system to store files associated with the solution. The default value is Database, which means the product library is going to be used to store the files. File System allows you to choose a directory on your computer or a network location for storing the files.

Storage Path

The path to the directory where files associated with the solution are going to be stored. This can be either a local directory or one that is on another machine on the network.
