Populating the z-value with a surface (Defense Mapping)

The z-values for features can be populated using a raster file to interpolate the appropriate values. The Populate Z For Selected Feature(s) tool allows you to specify the raster file from which you want to interpret the z-values.

NoteNote:

ArcGIS 3D Analyst extension must be installed to populate z-values using a surface.

Steps:
  1. Start ArcMap.
  2. Verify that 3D Analyst is installed and the extension is enabled.
  3. If necessary, load data in the map.
  4. On the main menu, click Customize > Toolbars > Production Editing.
  5. On the main menu, click Customize > Toolbars > Production Z Management.
  6. Click the Production Start Editing button Production Start Editing on the Production Editing toolbar.
    NoteNote:

The Manage Features and Create Attributes, Update Attributes, or Metadata Attributes windows automatically appear when you start an edit session using the Production Start Editing tool.

    TipTip:

If the Create Attributes, Update Attributes, or Metadata Attributes window does not appear when you start an edit session, click the Show/Hide Attributes button Show/Hide Attributes on the Manage Features window.

  7. Select the features whose z-values you want to populate using the Edit tool Edit Tool on the Production Editing toolbar.
  8. Click the Populate Z For Selected Feature(s) button Populate Z For Selected Feature(s) on the Production Z Management toolbar.

The Z Populate dialog box appears.
