Adding a selected feature as the area of interest (Defense Mapping)

There are several properties associated with an area of interest. These properties are divided into two sections: General and AOI. The General section includes properties such as the name, alias, description, and status of the area of interest. The AOI section includes properties such as the map scale, the reference scale for the area of interest, and whether the existence of the AOI has been verified.

When you add an area of interest to an instance, only the General properties are required. You can optionally indicate the AOI type, various scales, and whether the AOI contains data.

The steps below are for adding an AOI from a selected feature, but you can also add an AOI from an extent or by using Feature Builder if you don't have an extent.

Steps:
  1. Start ArcMap.
  2. Make sure you have data loaded in your map.
  3. Select the feature you want to use as the area of interest.
    TipTip:

You will not be able to add an AOI if you select more than one feature.

  4. If necessary, open the Product Library window by clicking Customize > Production > Product Library on the main menu.

A tree view of the product library appears.

  5. If necessary, expand Product Library and Products.
  6. Navigate to and right-click the instance for which you want to add an area of interest and click New AOI (Selected).

If your product has two or more AOIs, you will need to create a New AOI (Selected) for each of them.

    TipTip:

If New AOI (Selected) is disabled, you may have selected more than one feature. The command is also disabled if you selected a feature that is a multipart polygon; selecting the multipart polygon and running the Batch Import New Products command will create a single product, instance, and AOI for the multipart feature.

The New AOI (Selected) dialog box appears.
