Workflow: migrating parcel data to the parcel fabric

The following workflow can be used as a guide for migrating parcel feature class data to the parcel fabric:

Migrating parcel polygon and line features

Both a parcel polygon feature class and a corresponding line feature class is required to migrate parcel data to a parcel fabric using the topology loader geoprocessing tool. If you have only a parcel polygon feature class, you can use the Polygon To Line geoprocessing tool to create lines from your polygons. Make sure to choose Identify and story polygon neighboring information on the Polygon To Line dialog box to ensure that duplicate lines are not created for neighboring polygons sharing a common boundary.

Steps:
  1. Create a new topology in the feature dataset containing your parcel polygon and line feature classes and add both feature classes to the topology. Add the required set of rules to the topology.
  2. Validate the topology.
  3. In ArcMap, add the parcel fabric to which the data will be migrated and the topology containing the polygon and line feature class.
  4. Fix any topology errors.
  5. The topology must be a clean, validated topology to be migrated to a parcel fabric.
  6. Create and populate any parcel fabric system attribute fields on your polygon and line feature classes.
  7. For example attributes in a PIN or APN field on the polygon feature class is migrated to the Name system attribute field in the fabric parcels table.
  8. If you want to migrate attributes in additional fields to the parcel fabric, make sure to create the same fields in the corresponding parcel fabric tables.
  9. For example, if you want to migrate attributes in an ownership field on your polygon feature class, you need to create the same ownership field on the parcels table in the parcel fabric.
  10. To begin the migration process, open the Load A Topology To A Parcel Fabric geoprocessing tool located under Toolboxes > System Toolboxes > Parcel Fabric Tools.tbx > Data Migration on the Catalog window.
  11. To load a selection of parcel polygons, select the polygons you want to migrate using the Select Parcel Features tool. If there is a selection present, the topology loader will only load the selected data. If there is no selection present in the map, the entire dataset is loaded. The topology loader can load approximately 30,000 to 50,000 parcels in a single session. The number of parcels you can migrate will depend on your computer configuration and memory availability
  12. Choose or specify the parcel fabric to which the data will be migrated under Target Parcel Fabric. Choose the parcel polygon feature class for Input (Topology) Feature Class. Enter any other necessary parameters for your migration and run the tool.
  13. Load a Topology to a Parcel dialog box
    Load selected polygon features into the fabric.

    Once loading is complete, the migrated fabric parcels are displayed in ArcMap.

    TipTip:

    During the loading process, the topology loader tool will report the loading progress and the IDs of any polygons that failed to load. This report is also automatically saved to a CadastralImport.log file in the arc folder in your temp directory. The arc folder is suffixed by four alpha-numeric characters, for example arcD121. To open your temp directory, type %temp% in the navigation bar in Windows Explorer. The temporary arc folder is deleted once ArcMap is closed, so you will need to save a copy of the log file to another location on your disk if you want to keep the file.

    TipTip:

    Once you have migrated your data to the parcel fabric, you can run the Merge Parcel Courses tool to detect line points on selected parcels.
