Upgrading file geodatabases to work with a newer ArcGIS for Server instance

To upgrade a file geodatabase, you can either move it from your existing ArcGIS for Server on Amazon Web Services instance to your newer release instance and upgrade the geodatabase, or apply the service pack or patch directly to ArcGIS for Server and ArcGIS for Desktop on your existing instance, then upgrade the geodatabase.

Steps:
  1. If you are migrating to a new ArcGIS for Server instance, proceed with the steps in Migrating to ArcGIS Server 10.1 on Amazon Web Services to launch a new instance and move your existing data volume to the new instance.
    NoteNote:

If your file geodatabases are not stored on your existing data volume—for example, they are stored on the C drive of your existing instance—you must move each of the geodatabase files to your new instance. See Strategies for data transfer to Amazon Web Services for ways to move files in Amazon Web Services.

If you are applying a service pack or patch to the ArcGIS software in your ArcGIS Server on Amazon Web Services instance, download the service pack or patch for ArcGIS for Server and ArcGIS for Desktop, place them on your instance, and follow the installation instructions provided with the download.

  2. After migrating to a new instance or applying the service pack or patch, check the status of your file geodatabases to see if they need upgrading.
    1. Make a remote desktop connection to your new or updated ArcGIS for Server instance.

You must open the remote desktop protocol (RDP) port in your security group to make remote desktop connections. You can remove this rule from your security group after you move your data.

    2. Open ArcCatalog and navigate to the folder in which your file geodatabases are stored.
    3. Right-click the first file geodatabase and click Properties.
    4. Click the General tab.
    5. If the upgrade status indicates an upgrade is not needed, you are done migrating this file geodatabase. Close the Geodatabase Properties dialog box for this geodatabase and proceed to step 5.
    6. If the upgrade status indicates the geodatabase can be upgraded, close the Geodatabase Properties dialog box and proceed to step 3.
  3. Make backup copies of your file geodatabases before upgrading them.
  4. Once you have backup copies, open the Properties dialog box for each original file geodatabase and click Upgrade Geodatabase.

    The Upgrade Geodatabase tool opens.

  5. Leave both the Pre-requisites check and Upgrade geodatabase options checked, then click OK to upgrade the geodatabase.
  6. When the tool successfully completes, click Close to close the geoprocessing tool progress dialog box.
  7. Repeat steps 2 through 4 for each file geodatabase.
