Using the 3D Pan tool

The 3D Pan tool moves both the observer and target positions together, which allows you to move laterally through your 3D view without changing the relative direction in which you are looking. The compass bearing and the tilt angle of the view does not change when using the 3D Pan tool. This is similar to walking sideways while keeping your eyes staring straight ahead.

In ArcGlobe, the 3D Pan tool allows for curvature of the earth when moving laterally across the globe, and the elevation of the observer is kept constant.

The 3D Pan tool cannot work in global navigation mode in ArcGlobe because global mode does not allow the target point to be moved from the center of the planet. Using the 3D Pan tool when in global mode will automatically switch the view to surface mode.

Steps:
  1. In ArcGlobe, click the 3D Pan Pan button.
  2. The pointer changes to indicate the Pan tool.

  3. Click the 3D view and drag it.

    The 3D Pan tool's hand looks like it's grabbing the screen while you drag.

  4. The observer and target locations are moved along the same 3D vector to their new positions. In ArcGlobe, the elevation of the observer is kept constant.

  5. To adjust the camera vertically, hold down the SHIFT key and drag the view up or down.
  6. The elevation of the observer and target points become adjustable when using the 3D Pan tool in this manner.
TipTip:
  • The 3D Pan tool functionality is also exposed via the middle mouse button on the 3D Navigate tool. If you don't have a middle mouse button, you can hold down both left and right mouse buttons simultaneously.
  • It is often useful to reset your target location after using the 3D Pan tool, since the target position can be moved above or below the surface. You can use the Center On Target tool Center on Target, or right-click on the 3D view and click Set Target and Center.
