Connecting ArcMap to ArcGIS Online network analysis services

One way to connect to the ArcGIS Online network analysis services is through ArcGIS for Desktop. This help topic shows you how to do that.

NoteNote:

If you are developing an application and want to learn how to connect to and consume the network analysis services using a client other than ArcMap, you can start with the ArcGIS REST API help system.

LegacyLegacy:

Connecting requires one of the following versions of ArcGIS for Desktop:

  • 10.1 Service Pack 1 and later versions
  • 10.0 Service Pack 5

Although ArcGIS for Desktop 10.1 Final was released between two versions that support connecting to ArcGIS Online network analysis services, it isn't a supported client. You need to install Service Pack 1 if you are currently using 10.1 Final.

Creating a connection

Steps:
  1. Start ArcMap by clicking Start > All Programs > ArcGIS > ArcMap 10.1.
  2. Click the Catalog Window button Catalog on the Standard toolbar to open the Catalog window.
  3. In the Catalog window, expand GIS Servers and double-click Add ArcGIS Server.
  4. In the Add ArcGIS Server dialog box, choose Use GIS services.
  5. Click Next.
  6. In the Server URL text box, type the name of the ArcGIS Online service you want to connect to. Choose from the names in the table below.

    http://traffic.arcgis.com/arcgis/services

Provides a map service for viewing current, predicted, and past traffic conditions.

    http://route.arcgis.com/arcgis/services

Provides a service that allows you to get routes and directions, which you can consume through the Find Route dialog box. The connection also provides other network-analysis-enabled map services, but they can't be consumed through ArcMap. If you want to use the other services, you need to access them from a client other than ArcMap or use the similar services available on logistics.arcgis.com (see below).

    http://logistics.arcgis.com/arcgis/services

    Provides geoprocessing tools for solving:

    • Route—Finds the quickest or shortest paths to visit two or more stops. The tool can find multiple routes in a single solve.
    • Closest Facility—Measures driving distance or driving time to determine the nearest locations from another set of locations.
    • Service Areas—Also known as market or drive-time areas, this tool shows what roads can be reached from the input points within a given distance along the roads or within a given driving time.
    • Location-Allocation—Helps you determine where to place facilities, such as stores, fire stations, and even individual fire trucks, by choosing the potential sites that would maximize the nearby demand for the facilities.
    • Vehicle Routing Problem—Helps you optimally route a fleet of vehicles with options to support pickup and deliveries, specialties, breaks, and more.

  7. Type your Esri account user name in the User Name text box.

The Esri account must be part of an ArcGIS Online for organizations account.

You can purchase an organizational subscription or request a free trial if you don't have a subscription already.

  8. Type your password for the account in the Password text box.
  9. Click Finish.

The server connection appears in the Catalog window.

  10. Expand the server connection, then the World folder, to begin consuming the services.
