Security settings

Security issues involved with distributing data through a published map file can be addressed through the Security tab on the Publisher Settings dialog box. You can require a password to open your map, choose whether to include Internet Map Service layer passwords, or decide whether the published map can be packaged. Additionally, you can set time-out dates for your PMF or designate the ArcGIS for Desktop applications that it may be opened in.

Protecting the published map with a password

  1. Click the Publisher menu and click Settings.
  2. Click the Security tab.
  3. Check Password protect the published map.
  4. Type a password and confirm it.
  5. ArcReader will require the password to open the map.
NoteNote:

The password is case sensitive.

Publishing IMS layer passwords

  1. Click the Publisher menu and click Settings.
  2. Click the Security tab.
  3. Check Store the password within the published map and click OK.
NoteNote:
  1. Secure data requires a password to be entered when it is added to ArcMap. Use this setting to store secure IMS layer passwords in the published map if you want the ArcReader user to see the secure layers without entering a password.
  2. This setting also applies to ArcGIS for Server services.
  3. By default, maps containing secure layers will prompt the ArcReader user for a password, but you can turn off password protection by including the password with the layer when the map is published.

Creating published maps that can be packaged

The Data Packager will only package published maps that have this permission. Published maps created in Publisher versions prior to ArcGIS 9 cannot be packaged. Published ArcGlobe documents cannot be packaged.

  1. Click the Publisher menu and click Settings.
  2. Click the Security tab.
  3. Check Allow data packaging and click OK.

Publishing maps that will time out

  1. Click the Publisher menu and click Settings.
  2. Click the Other tab.
  3. Check Enable time-out.
  4. Choose to Warn or Inform the ArcReader user that the map has timed out.
  5. Click the time-out date drop-down list and set an expiration date.
  6. Type a message that will appear when the published map has expired and click OK.
NoteNote:

The ArcReader user is warned that the map will time out five days before the time-out date.

Adding comments to publish with the map

  1. Click the Publisher menu and click Settings.
  2. Click the Other tab.
  3. Type comments into the Comments text box and click OK.

ArcReader users will be able to see the comments on the ArcReader Map Properties dialog box.

Publishing maps for use in ArcReader only

  1. Click the Publisher menu and click Settings.
  2. Click the Application tab.
  3. Check Open in ArcReader only and click OK.
NoteNote:

The published map will only be usable in ArcReader. No other ArcGIS application will be able to open the published map.

NoteNote:

Published maps created from ArcGlobe can only be used in ArcReader.

Publishing maps for use in custom ArcReader applications

  1. Click the Publisher menu and click Settings.
  2. Click the Application tab.
  3. Uncheck Open in ArcReader only and click OK.
NoteNote:
  1. This setting allows applications created with the ArcReaderControl and ReaderControl to open and interact with the published map.
  2. Published maps with three-dimensional content cannot be used in custom applications.

Publishing maps for use in ArcMap

  1. Click the Publisher menu and click Settings.
  2. Click the Application tab.
  3. Uncheck Open in ArcReader only.
  4. Check Unrestricted access to contents of Published Map and click OK.
NoteNote:

If the published map is password protected, the password will be required to open the map in ArcMap. This setting allows a two-dimensional map to be opened in ArcMap or any ArcGIS application that supports using two-dimensional published maps. Using this setting has the effect of turning off all settings, since users with ArcMap can open the published map as a template and republish it with their own settings. If this setting is used, it will not be possible to package the published map to a compressed and locked format. Published maps that contain globe content can only be opened in ArcReader.
