Creating a Tracking Service to Test the Installation

This procedure makes use of the tutorial data installed with Tracking Server in order to test the Tracking Server installation. For the complete Tracking Server tutorial, which includes more details for some of these steps, refer to the Tracking Server Help.

Steps:
  1. Click the Message Definitions tab in Tracking Server Manager. Initially, the list box containing message definitions is empty. If message definitions have already been created, they will appear in the list box.
  2. Click Import.
  3. Navigate to the Tutorial folder in the location of your Tracking Server installation. Select the taxis.dsd file and click Open.

The default location of the tutorial data is in the <Tracking Server Installation Directory>\Tutorial folder. For example, a typical path would be C:\Program Files\ArcGIS\TrackingServer\Tutorial.

    LegacyLegacy:

After you click Open, the Create/Publish the Service dialog box appears. This dialog box allows you to automatically create and publish a service for the imported message definition. It was not available in versions of Tracking Server before 10.1.

If you click Yes, you will not need to manually create and publish the service later. If this is your first time working with Tracking Server, it is recommended to click No, so that you can learn the steps involved in creating a service manually. In any case, you will know that this time-saving option to automatically create services exists.

  4. The Taxis message definition now appears in the list box. Click on it to select it and then click Edit. The Message Definition Editor dialog box appears.
  5. Click the Data Time Zone drop-down arrow and select the time zone of your system for the incoming data.
  6. Click OK to close the dialog box.
  7. Click the Tracking Services tab. Initially, the list box containing tracking services is empty. If tracking services have already been created, they will appear in the list box.
  8. Click New. The Tracking Services Editor dialog box appears.
  9. Type Taxis in the Tracking Service Name text box.
  10. Select Simple for the Tracking Service Type.
  11. Click the Message definition for observation drop-down arrow, and select the Taxis message definition from the list.
  12. Click OK to close the Tracking Services Editor dialog box. The new tracking service now appears in the list box.
  13. Click the Data Links tab in Tracking Server Manager.
  14. Double-click the Tracking Server Connector data link to open the TMS Connnector Configuration dialog box.
  15. Click on the Tracking Services tab.

A list of available tracking services appears in the list box on the left side of the dialog box. Only services that are checked will be distributed to the Gateway and connected clients.

  16. Check the Taxis service to enable the distribution of this service to clients.
  17. Click Apply and then click OK.
