ArcSDE application server installation guide

This installation guide includes instructions for installation and setup of the ArcSDE application server for PostgreSQL and administration command line tools. You can install both the application server and command line tools (the default), just the application server, or just the command line tools.

Installations are specific to the DBMS and operating system you are using. Be sure to download and run the installation appropriate to your system.

Before you install

You must install a database and create a geodatabase in it before you set up an ArcSDE service. Use the Create Enterprise Geodatabase geoprocessing tool, the Enable Enterprise Geodatabase geoprocessing tool, or a Python script to create a geodatabase before installing the application server and setting up a service.

Read the topics in the section "Setting up a geodatabase in PostgreSQL" in the ArcGIS documentation for instructions on creating a geodatabase.

NoteNote:

An enterprise geodatabase must exist before you can start an ArcSDE service. If you have not already created a geodatabase, do so now.

Also be sure the computer where you install the ArcSDE features meets the minimum system requirements. These are listed on the ArcGIS Resource Center.

TipTip:

You can get a supported installation of PostgreSQL from the Esri Customer Care portal in the DBMS Support Files section.

What is installed?

When you install the application server, all files needed to set up an ArcSDE service are installed to the local system. This includes the command line tools necessary to create (Windows operating systems) and start a service: sdeservice and sdemon, respectively.

When you install the command line tools feature, you get all the ArcSDE administration command line tools.

All files are installed in the pgexe directory where you choose to install ArcSDE.

On Windows, the documentation for the command line tools is installed in a documentation folder one level above pgexe. On Linux or UNIX servers, move the documentation from the installation files to a directory of your choosing on your local drive.
