Installing the Web Applications Developer Framework

The ArcGIS Web Applications for the Microsoft .NET Framework Web ADF facilitates the development of ArcGIS for Server applications. The Web ADF includes Web Controls, Web Mapping Application templates, samples, sample data, documentation, and help. The Web ADF Software Developer Kit contains Visual Studio integration features (Visual Studio 2010 integration and Visual Web Developer 2010 Express). See Web ADF integration with Visual Studio for more information.

NoteNote:

The Web ADF Runtime is a separate setup program, available on the ArcGIS Web Applications for Microsoft .NET Framework media or in the ArcGIS Web Applications for Microsoft .NET Framework download. The Web ADF Runtime should be installed on the web server machine running the developed ArcGIS Web Applications for Microsoft .NET Framework applications.

How to prepare to install the Web ADF

  1. Verify that your site meets the system requirements. For system requirement information, see System requirements.
  2. Log in as a user with administrative privileges.
  3. Close all applications on your computer.
  4. Insert the ArcGIS Web Applications for the Microsoft .NET Framework media into the appropriate drive to automatically launch the media front end or browse to the download folder containing the setup.

NoteNote:

ArcGIS Web Applications for the Microsoft .NET Framework requires the following:

  • Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5 Service Pack 1. The Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5 Service Pack 1 is available on the ArcGIS Web Applications for the Microsoft .NET Framework media.
  • Microsoft Internet Explorer 7 or higher. You must obtain and install Internet Explorer 7 or higher prior to installing ArcGIS Web Applications for the Microsoft .NET Framework.

How to install the Web ADF

  1. From the media front end, click the setup link to launch the ArcGIS Web Applications for the Microsoft .NET Framework setup program.
  2. During the installation, read the license agreement and accept it, or exit if you don't agree with the terms.
  3. The installation allows you to select the features you want.Web ADF feature installation
    NoteNote:

If you are missing one or more Visual Studio integration features, this means you don't have the specific Visual Studio product installed for the missing integration feature. For example, if Visual Web Developer 2010 Express is installed, the Visual Web Developer 2010 Express integration feature will be available. Conversely, if Visual Web Developer 2010 Express is not installed, the Visual Web Developer 2010 Express integration feature will not be available for installation.

On the Select Features dialog box, choose Web Applications Developer Framework. Click the arrow to the left of the Web Applications Developer Framework feature. From the list, choose Will be installed on local hard drive to install the Web Applications Developer Framework. Unselect all other features and choose Entire feature will be unavailable to exclude these features from installation.

The ArcGIS Web Applications for the Microsoft .NET Framework installation consists of a collection of features and subfeatures. Features consisting of subfeatures will have a plus (+) or minus (-) sign to their left. The plus sign will expand the feature so that you can view its subfeatures. The minus sign will collapse the list of subfeatures.

Installation guidelines

It is recommended that you install the Web ADF Software Developer Kit feature on the machine where your web applications will be developed.

The Web ADF Runtime must be installed on the web server machine that deploys the developed application. If you create desktop applications using the Web ADF, the Web ADF Runtime must be installed on any machine on which your application runs.
