Introduction to installing and configuring ArcGIS for Desktop

ArcGIS for Desktop is available as Basic, Standard, or Advanced. Both the concurrent use and single use versions are included in this media kit, which contains everything you need to install and use ArcGIS for Desktop on various computers on a network. Basic, Standard, and Advanced are licensing product levels of ArcMap and ArcCatalog applications. Once installed, you can change product levels or switch between concurrent use and single use versions without uninstalling or performing any installation action.

Concurrent use license

For concurrent use versions, a license allows ArcGIS for Desktop products to be used on any machine. Each installation must access a license manager that contains the appropriate license for the software seat type (Advanced, Standard, or Basic). The license manager, installed on the network, dictates the number of copies of Basic, Standard, or Advanced that can be run simultaneously. ArcInfo Workstation users will be familiar with the use of a license manager for software access.

Single use license

For single use versions, authorization per machine is required. Once the ArcGIS for Desktop installation is complete, you will be provided with the opportunity to authorize your single use product.

Installation steps

The installation of ArcGIS for Desktop is a multistep process (with only the first three steps required for ArcGIS for Desktop applications):

  1. Install ArcGIS License Manager (if it doesn't already exist for your use). If you intend to use ArcGIS for Desktop as a single use version only, you do not need to install ArcGIS License Manager.
  2. Install ArcGIS for Desktop.
  3. Complete the ArcGIS Administrator wizard. When using the wizard, you will need to specify your product type, assign a license manager (if using a concurrent use product), or authorize your software (if using a single use product).
  4. Install tutorial data (optional, from the ArcGIS Tutorial Data media).
  5. Install any of the optional components available for ArcGIS for Desktop. These components (outlined below) may be required depending on your use of ArcGIS for Desktop.

ArcGIS for Desktop components

ArcGIS for Desktop contains the following components.

To install a component, click the download link to download the self extracting exe. After the download completes, you have the option of starting the setup immediately or running it manually. To run the setup manually, browse to the downloaded folder containing the setup and run setup.exe.

The download contains a PDF version of the license agreement that is displayed during each installation. The license agreement is located in the \Desktop\Documentation folder.

Additional information is provided in this installation guide for the ArcGIS for Desktop setup program.
