Using map services on ArcGIS 10.0

After you have added the Data Appliance map services to your ArcGIS Server, you are ready to use them. Because of the many capabilities it exposes, a map service can be used in a large number of Esri and non-Esri applications. For more information, see Map service usage in Desktop Help 10.0 for ArcGIS under Professional Library > ArcGIS Server > Publishing services > Types of services > Map services.

For information on the available map services, see the Directory of maps and globes.

ArcGIS for Desktop

Both ArcMap and ArcGlobe support adding ArcGIS Server map services as data. Additionally, you can use ArcCatalog to preview and administer a map service.

For more information on using ArcMap, see A quick tour of ArcMap in Desktop Help 10.0 for ArcGIS under Professional Library > Mapping and visualization.

For more information on using ArcGlobe, see The ArcGlobe user interface in Desktop Help 10.0 for ArcGIS under Professional Library > Extensions > 3D Analyst > Visualizing data in 3D > Using ArcGlobe.

From ArcCatalog you can preview the services and drag them into ArcMap and ArcGlobe. For more information on connecting to the Data Appliance services using ArcCatalog, see Connecting to GIS servers in Desktop Help 10.0 for ArcGIS under Professional Library > Data Management > Using ArcCatalog > Working with ArcGIS servers.

ArcGIS Explorer

Map services can be added to both two- and three-dimensional maps in ArcGIS Explorer. For information on how to use map services in ArcGIS Explorer, see GIS services in ArcGIS Explorer Help under Adding and working with data sources > Adding data sources.
