Sync with feature services

At ArcPad 10.2, support for synchronization with feature services was introduced as a replacement for synchronizing data with the ArcPad Extension for ArcGIS Server. The following steps show you how to prepare and synchronize your data in ArcPad.

Prepare your project in ArcGIS for Desktop

To begin, you prepare your ArcPad project as you would any other project in ArcGIS for Desktop.

Steps:
  1. Organize your background and operational data; configure your geodatabase features such as subtypes, domains, and related tables; set the display scale and symbology for your project; and save your map (MXD). For more information, see Preparing your data for ArcPad.
  2. Use the ArcPad Data Manager to Get Data for ArcPad. Remember to set up your photo workflows and validate your feature classes. For more information, see Get Data for ArcPad.

Prepare your feature service and add to your project

Additionally, create a feature service from your same map document, and add information about the service to your ArcPad project.

Steps:
  1. In ArcMap, connect to ArcGIS for Server or ArcGIS Online and share the same map (MXD) that you created your ArcPad project from as a feature service. For more information, see the Publishing Services with ArcGIS topic in the ArcGIS Help.
    Share as Service
  2. Browse to your feature service in Catalog, right-click the feature service, and choose Create Layer.

The feature service layer (LYR) that is created contains the feature service URL.

  3. In the ArcPad Toolbox Tools, use the LYR created in the previous step and the AXF from your earlier checkout as inputs for the Add feature service URL to AXF tool.

The result of running the Add feature service URL to AXF tool will be an AXF that contains the information needed to synchronize with the feature service from within ArcPad.

Collect data and synchronize edits in ArcPad

Open this project as you would any other in ArcPad, make edits, and with a valid data connection, synchronize your changes with the server.

Steps:
  1. After copying your project onto your mobile device, open it in ArcPad, and make your edits. For more information, see Editing data in ArcPad.
  2. Before attempting to sync, ensure you have any necessary server credentials entered in the Server tab of the ArcPad Options dialog box. For example, if you are synchronizing with an ArcGIS Online hosted feature service, type your ArcGIS Online user credentials into the ArcPad Options dialog box.
  3. When you have a data connection and are ready to sync, select the Synchronize Data with ArcGIS Server tool.
  4. The ArcPad synchronizer will report all edits uploaded to and downloaded from the feature service and includes a progress bar and any error reporting available.
