Troubleshoot your Windows Mobile installation

Some common issues encountered when installing ArcPad on Windows Mobile are described in this topic.

ArcPad Deployment Manager not working

Microsoft ActiveSync (Windows XP) or Windows Mobile Device Center (Windows Vista, Windows 7 or 8) needs to be installed on your Windows computer for the ArcPad Deployment Manager to work correctly. If the ArcPad Deployment Manager does not work correctly, it may be because Microsoft ActiveSync or Windows Mobile Device Center is not installed or not working correctly on your Windows computer.

To correct this, do the following steps:

  1. Close the ArcPad Deployment Manager.
  2. Install Microsoft ActiveSync (Windows XP) or Windows Mobile Device Center (Windows Vista, Windows 7 or 8).
  3. Restart the ArcPad Deployment Manager.

Unknown Publisher message when installing on Windows Mobile

When installing ArcPad—or any of the ArcPad components—on a Windows Mobile device, you may see the following warning message on your device:

The program is from an unknown publisher. You should install it only if you trust its publisher. Do you want to continue?

You can safely ignore this warning message and tap Yes to continue with the installation.

Error message when installing ArcPad

The following error message may occur:

To correct this, do the following steps:

  1. Remove the Esri fonts manually using Windows Explorer on your Windows computer to navigate to the \Windows\Fonts folder on your connected Windows Mobile device. Use the standard file delete method in Windows Explorer to remove the esri_11s.ttf, esri_30s.ttf, esri_49s.ttf, and esri_144s.ttf fonts.
  2. Do a soft reset (reboot) of your Windows Mobile device.
  3. Remove the Esri ArcPad Font from your Windows Mobile device. Tap Start > Settings > Remove Programs. Choose Esri ArcPad Font from the program list and tap Remove.

Installation was unsuccessful message during install

When installing ArcPad—or any of the ArcPad components—on a Windows Mobile device, you may see the following warning message on your device:

Installation was unsuccessful.

This indicates that there was not enough memory to install the component. Remove any unused components (this includes both applications and data) and restart the installation.

Registration error on Windows Mobile

When a valid registration number is entered in the Registration dialog box, the OK button becomes enabled, indicating that the registration number is valid. For a valid registration number to be accepted, ArcPad also requires that valid owner information exists for the Windows Mobile device. The owner information is entered in the Owner settings in Start > Settings.

Soft Reset? message during uninstall

Uninstalling ArcPad 8.0 or earlier is a two step process. After you first choose to Remove ArcPad, you will see the following dialog box:

Tap Yes on this dialog box.

Your Windows Mobile device reboots automatically. Return to Remove Programs and choose ArcPad again to complete the uninstall. This two step uninstall process is not required for ArcPad 10 and later.
