Importing CAD data to a geodatabase enables you to edit the information, perform cleanup operations, create topologies, and incorporate it with your existing ArcGIS data.

In ArcMap, you can import CAD data directly from the table of contents using the CAD menu. The tools automatically add the results to your map during execution. Tools are also available for converting CAD text to geodatabase annotation.

You can import a CAD file as a complete dataset, as individual feature types, or filter the drawing for layers, attribute values, and other graphic properties. If you work with AutoCAD drawings that contain CAD-defined feature classes, their entity-linked attributes also transfer to the geodatabase. This can save you time and help you avoid errors associated with reentering attributes manually.
