1.  Installing and Configuring the ArcGIS 10 License Manager

This is the Quick Start Guide to authorize ArcGIS License Manager 10 for the ArcGIS Desktop (Concurrent Use), ArcGIS Engine (Concurrent Use), and ArcInfo Workstation products. Click here to view the full License Manager Reference Guide.

Introduction

The copy protection mechanism for the ArcGIS Desktop, ArcGIS Engine, and ArcInfo Workstation 10 product lines has been updated to use the latest FLEXnet Publisher v11.6.1 software. This update includes the following enhancements to the license manager:

  • NEW: A standardized method of authorizing licenses on your license manager. You no longer need to request a license file based on a hardware key or MAC address from Esri Customer Service. Esri Customer Service will send you an e-mail containing the authorization numbers to use during the authorization process.
  • An updated license manager and License Manager administration tool.
  • License borrowing.
  • Monitor borrowed licenses.
  • A completely keyless license manager. Certain customers outside the U.S. who have been using previous versions of the license manager with a hardware key no longer have to use hardware keys as the new copy protection mechanism automatically locks licenses to the specific machine.
  • The ability to install the License Manager to any location.

NOTES

  • Recommended: An Internet connection to complete the authorization steps below.
  • Based on your machine configuration and network traffic, the initial authorization process might take between 30 seconds and 2 minutes.

 Borrowing and Returning Licenses

If you need to work while away from your network, you can borrow the core product and any necessary extensions currently available on your license manager. The default borrow timeout is 30 days. Contact your License Administrator to modify this time-out date.

1.  After installing the software and defining the license manager, open the ArcGIS Administrator from Start > Programs > ArcGIS > ArcGIS Administrator.

2.  Select the product folder (Desktop) from the table of contents and make sure you have selected the product you want to borrow.

3.  Select the Borrow-Return folder and check the boxes next to the features you want to borrow and click Apply.

4.  Once the features have been borrowed, click OK to close the ArcGIS Administrator.

5.  To return licenses back to the license manager before the time-out, reconnect to your network and select the Borrow-Return folder in the ArcGIS Administrator, uncheck the boxes next to the features you have borrowed, and click Apply. Click OK to close the ArcGIS Administrator.

If you have not returned your licenses before they expire, they will automatically be disabled on your machine after the expiration date and the license count on the license manager will go back up.

4.  Troubleshooting

Having trouble authorizing ArcGIS 10?

You must use the ArcGIS 10 authorization numbers received from Esri Customer Service via e-mail as these are the only numbers that will authorize your ArcGIS 10 software. The authorization numbers are sent to the primary maintenance contact in your organization. The authorization numbers from previous versions or beta will not work.

If you did not receive an automated e-mail from Esri Customer Service with your licensing codes, please contact service@esri.com with your Name, Company, Customer Number, and Global Account ID, and they can help get them generated for you.

You must also use the correct authorization numbers for the product you are authorizing:

  • Single-use products use ESU numbers. An ESU number will be formatted similar to ESU123456789 and will always contain the prefix ‘ESU’.
  • Concurrent-use products (ArcInfo (CU), ArcEditor (CU), ArcView (CU), ArcGIS Engine Runtime (CU), and ArcInfo Workstation) use EFL numbers. An EFL number will be formatted similar to EFL123456789 and will always contain the prefix ‘EFL’. When authorizing concurrent-use licenses on a license manager, you may enter a count that is equal to, or greater than 1, and that does not exceed the number of licenses you are entitled to. For example, if you have authorized 20 copies on your first attempt, and your maximum entitlement is for 100 copies, you cannot authorize more than 80 licenses on the second attempt.
  • Server-related products must be authorized with ECP numbers.

  • United States users: If you are experiencing trouble authorizing the software through Esri Customer Service, contact Esri Support.
  • International users: Contact your authorized international distributor. Find an Esri distributor that serves you.
