**Esri has certified ArcGIS 10 SP2 as a hosted application with Citrix XenApp 6 and Windows 2008 R2 using the Citrix ICA Online Plug-in for Windows 12.1. Please note that ArcGlobe, ArcScene, and any other 3D application generally will not work over Remote Desktop or other Windows Terminal Services clients, because these clients do not support 3D graphics acceleration. Also note that Esri does not recommend running virtualized XenApp servers to host ArcGIS Desktop applications due to performance bottlenecks encountered with multiple layers of virtualization.
Hardware Requirements
| CPU Speed | 2.2 GHz minimum or higher; Hyper-threading (HHT) or Multi-core recommended |
|---|---|
| Processor |
Windows/Linux: Intel Pentium 4, Intel Core Duo, or Xeon Processors; SSE2 (or greater) On Windows: Run this Microsoft utility from your Windows command prompt to check your processor See Dual or dual-core support policy. Solaris: UltraSPARC II, IIi, IIe minimum |
| Memory/RAM | 2 GB or higher |
| Display Properties | 24 bit color depth |
| Screen Resolution | 1024 x 768 recommended or higher at Normal size (96dpi) |
| Swap Space | Determined by the operating system, 500 MB minimum. |
| Disk Space | Windows: 577 MB Linux/Solaris: 1.4 GB ArcReader will create cache files when used; additional disk space may be required. |
| Video/Graphics Adapter |
Check your computer's ability to run ArcGIS 64 MB RAM minimum, 256 MB RAM or higher recommended. NVIDIA, ATI and INTEL chipsets supported 24 bit capable graphics accelerator Windows: OpenGL version 2.0 runtime or higher is required, and Shader Model 3.0 or higher is recommended. Be sure to use the latest available driver. |
| User Interface |
Linux: X Windows with Gnome or KDE Desktop Environment is required. Solaris: X Windows with a Desktop Environment is required. Note: CDE on Solaris 10 has been deprecated. The Java Desktop Environment (based on Gnome) meets this requirement. |
Software Requirements
| Microsoft .NET Framework Requirement | Windows: .NET Framework 3.5 SP1 must be installed prior to installing ArcReader for Windows. |
|---|---|
| Browser Requirement | Windows: ArcReader requires a minimum installation of Microsoft Internet Explorer Version 7.0 or 8.0. If you do not have an installation of Microsoft Internet Explorer Version 7.0/8.0, you must obtain and install it prior to installing ArcReader.
Linux/Solaris: ArcReader requires a minimum installation of the latest version of Firefox or Mozilla. If you do not have an installation of Firefox or Mozilla, it is recommended you obtain and install it prior to installing ArcReader. |
| Microsoft WinHelp Patch | Windows 7 and Windows Vista: The following Microsoft patch is recommended, but not required, when using ArcGIS Desktop, ArcInfo Workstation, ArcGIS Engine or ArcReader on Microsoft Vista or Windows 7. ArcGIS Desktop, ArcInfo Workstation, ArcGIS Engine and ArcReader provide pop-up context sensitive help topics for tools, commands and dialogs delivered using WinHlp32. WinHlp32 will not function on Windows 7 and Windows Vista without this patch. Here is Microsoft KnowledgeBase article 917607 about this patch, which also contains links so you can download the patch. If you access pop-up context sensitive help without this patch being present, you will get a message from Windows prompting you to download the patch. For best usability, we recommend installing the patch at the time you install ArcGIS. For additional information, please refer to Esri KowledgeBase article 32530. |
| Printer Support | Windows: ArcGIS supports printing to any Microsoft certified Windows printer using the native driver in ArcGIS. Please note that some printer drivers do not support complex maps and the ArcPress printer driver or additional hardware may be needed for these complex maps.
Esri recommends the following configuration when printing large maps with the ArcPress printer drivers:
For more information on supported printers please refer to the following Knowledge Base FAQ: What printers are supported by ArcGIS Desktop 9.x? Linux/Solaris: ArcGIS products do not currently support printing when running on Linux/Solaris operating systems. |
When running in a 64-bit environment, ArcGIS Desktop, ArcGIS Server, ArcGIS Engine, and ArcReader run as a 32-bit application. See Does ESRI support 64-bit processors with ArcGIS 10.0 products?
Operating System Limitations
All Platforms
Operating System Limitations - Windows
- ArcGIS Developer Help System on Windows 7 requires Adobe Reader 9.1.2 or higher. See KB37244 for more details.
- ArcGlobe/ArcScene, and any other 3D application generally will not work over Remote Desktop or other Windows Terminal Services clients, because they do not support 3D graphics acceleration.
Operating System Limitations - Linux
The Linux releases of ArcGIS Engine-related products are only supported on CPUs that adhere to the x86 architecture. Esri only supports the following Linux operating systems, whose releases are designated by their respective vendors as "Generally Available", "Production", "Fully Supported" or equivalent (not "Beta" or derivative /binary compatible distributions).

Operating System Limitations - Solaris
It is a requirement that the OS (binary) has not been modified. Esri does not provide any support if products are installed on Developer's Release of an Operating System.
Sun Solaris 10
- The following are required:
- Solaris Maintenance Update 4 (dated 8/07) minimum or higher
- 113886-29 patch for OpenGL
- 113887-29 patch for OpenGL
- 119812-08 patch for X11 6.6.2 (dated 2/2010)
- OpenGL: Sun OpenGL 1.5 patch 120812-31 or any version of Mesa that supports OpenGL 2.0 runtime environment or higher.
- ArcGIS Engine and ArcGIS Server take advantage of Sun's "extended FILE" facility when running on a Solaris system that supports that functionality. This substantially expands the number of files ArcGIS can have open simultaneously on Solaris. Sun's extended FILE support for SPARC systems is only available on Solaris 10. It is included in Solaris 10 releases done after August 2007.
- For 64 bit OS support: the 32 bit versions of the packages above must be installed prior to installing ArcGIS.
