Adding line points

This topic applies to ArcGIS for Desktop Standard and ArcGIS for Desktop Advanced only.

You can use the Add Line Point tool located on the Parcel Editor toolbar to assign a line point to a fabric point if that point lies on or close to an adjacent parcel boundary, but does not split the boundary. If the line point is offset from its parcel line, a fabric least-squares adjustment needs be run to force the line point back onto its parcel line.

Add line point

Line points are not detected during the data migration process and are sometimes missed during the join process. This tool as well as the Merge Courses tool can be used to identify and assign line points.

When using the Add Line Point tool, you can choose to bend lines to line points for cartographic purposes. That way, a least-squares adjustment does not have to be run immediately to remove slivers and gaps resulting from line points. Parcel lines are bent to line points provided that they lie closer to the line point than the distance specified for the Line-point tolerance on the Edit Environment tab on the Parcel Fabric Properties dialog box.

NoteNote:

During a least-squares adjustment, any bent or flexed lines are straightened and line points are moved onto the straightened lines. However, if a line point is significantly offset from its straight line, you can choose to keep the straight line bent to the line point.

To use the Add Line Point tool, follow these steps:

Steps:
  1. In an edit session in ArcMap, click the Add Line Point tool Add a Line Point on the Parcel Editor toolbar.
  2. On the Add a Line Point dialog box, click the start point (or from-point) of the parcel line on which you want to add a line point.
  3. Click the end point (or to-point) of the parcel line on which you want to add a line point.
  4. Click the parcel point that should be a line point.
  5. If you want to bend the line to the line point, choose Bend the line to the line point.
  6. Click Apply to assign the line point.
  7. NoteNote:

If a line point is offset from the parcel line on which it should lie, the offset amount is displayed in the Offset text box.

  8. Click Close to close the dialog box.
TipTip:
You cannot assign a line point to a parcel point that already splits the boundary of the adjacent parcel line (this could occur in migrated parcel data).
TipTip:
To view line points, turn on the line points sublayer in the Table Of Contents window in ArcMap.
TipTip:

Use the Delete Line Point tool Delete a Line Point located on the Parcel Editor toolbar to remove line points or flex points.
